Friday Fave 47.18 November 23, 2018
Favorite songs tend to come from our past. Often, it’s from our formative years in our teens or early 20’s. Many get stuck in the ear that they grew up in. I have been a music fan all my life. While I have developed many new(er) favorite bands I’ve noticed they all seem to have a sound that reminds me of my youth. Maybe that’s why I like this week’s Friday Fave.
The first time I heard “All The Reaching Trims”, or Daniel Romano for that matter, was on CBC Q with Tom Power. He played it during a show a few weeks ago and instantly loved. I had to look him up and have since acquired a few albums. The song is from his latest album “Finally Free” which is being released next week.
Romano is a Canadian musician, poet and artist and has been Juno and Polaris Prize nominated. Since 2009, he has released 11 albums of his own plus he has produced and performed with City and Colour. As a visual artist he has designed album covers form many including the aforementioned City and Colour. He is also a talented leather craftsman. Yet somehow, until the fall of 2018 he escaped my notice. His musical catalogue defies strict categorization contains folk, country, pop and straight ahead rock.
“All The Reaching Trims” opens with catchy and precise acoustic guitar picking and what I assume is Romano multi-tracking his own harmonies. His artistry comes out in the pictures he paints with the lyrics that build to a crescendo when the strings come in. It ends as it begins; Daniel and his guitar returning to the opening refrain. It contains all the elements that make this song as well as the artist a new Fave.
Enjoy & as always; play it loud!
